It would be really super nice fantastic if just one single linux/freebsd firewall distro supported roadwarrior connections to the firewall via L2TP over IPSEC without a huge huge song and dance. Please do this, it would be garmungus. Here is the idea:
Use the vpn client built into windows to login via the very secure L2TP/IPSEC using a username/password that is stored in a file (similar to how samba does it). Simple, to the point and works and finally deprecates needing to use PPTP.
