Interest in US training session?

After our coming session at EuroBSDCon 2011, we are planning to host a session in the US this year. It will be either one or two full days, and I’m leaning towards two but open to suggestions. It would likely be held in our home base of Louisville, KY, easily reachable by air or road.

In our past training sessions at BSDCan and EuroBSDCon, we’ve had between 15 and 70 people. This year looks like we’ll have about 40 at EuroBSDCon. We will have to charge more than the BSD conferences charge for a single tutorial, as they have sponsors who help cover the costs involved. I don’t know how much yet though. I need to get some kind of an idea of how many would attend, so I know what kind of venue. We won’t be selling out the Yum Center with 22,000 seats, but I’m not sure if we need space for 10 or 50. I would limit it to some reasonably low number, like 75 at most and maybe less. If this is something you would definitely travel to attend (depending on dates, cost), let me know in the comments or email.

Live streaming

Some people just can’t afford to travel, so we’ll also do what we can to provide live streaming, or at a minimum it will definitely be recorded for later purchase. Streaming capabilities may be dependent on the facility. We do have multiple 4G cards with pretty impressive performance, so that should suffice if nothing else. I expect we will find a way to offer this via live streaming on the Internet available for purchase. Those people will not be able to interact like those in person, simply watch and listen, and we’d probably bring up a special IRC channel for it.

To get an email when these things get finalized, make sure you’re on our announcements mailing list.

I’d be interested in coming down for sure… I’m joining the announce list now.

Thanks for the heads up about this.

  3. Kevin Says:

Very interested. I am in SC so the trip is not to bad for me. Of course pricing will still be a factor. Any ballpark numbers?

It looks like SELF will be either in Charlotte or Atlanta next year (June 2012). Any chance of doing a training there also? I see several of the SELF board member regularly and built most of the network last year (using pfSense), so I would be glad to run it by them?

  4. Bryan Says:

Yes, very interested in either Louisville or ATL

  5. Blaine Says:

Very interested in the live streaming as I am here in Southern Cal.
This would be great for me to get some real training and tips.
    Thanks again.

  6. Oliver Says:

Definitely interested in the streaming. I can’t say for sure whether I could make the trip but I would love to if possible.

  7. Mike Says:

If it’s affordable for a lone guy, I’d love the streaming option, especially if I buy it on DVD or watch it later on a streaming site.

  8. Ricardo Says:

    The wait is over =)

Very interested in attend, two days will be perfect!

    Louisville, KY is ok.

  9. Nassar Says:

I am interested but how cost me the 2 days?
    What about accommodation and Visa?

  10. obrith Says:

I’m pretty sure I’d attend (flying out for N. California). An idea of when and approximate cost would help me get approval.

US Training Yes! Not sure why you guys have not offered Webex based group training for a fee yet. I am sure a lot of people would sign up! Basic/Intermediate/Advanced classes. That has been one of the issues which has made me look at other solutions like Mikrotik or Cisco because there is a tremendous amount of training offerings but this firewall does not. You are limited to the following:

    1. Spending a lot of time playing with it.
    2. Spending alot of time exploring the forum.
    3. Paying for support which I think is an expensive way to be trained and should be used break fix and or complex configurations (Not covered in trainings)

    Just my 2 cents….

  12. Nate Says:

US Training? Absolutely! Louisville’s close enough to me. I’m in.

And ditto kapara’s comment… A free or reasonable fee-based web training on an ongoing/scheduled basis would be great! And add something to the bottom-line, I’d bet.

  13. kapara Says:

Also I would break up the quantity of users to no more than 25 people per trainer. Maybe doing different level classes. 75 people in a class is alot….questions galore. Maybe do Intro/Intermediate/Adv. classes….

  14. Adam Says:

I live in Louisville, so count me in!

  15. William Says:

Very interested, and willing to travel.

  16. Justin Says:

Also interested, willing to travel, also.

  17. Mickey Says:

    Louisville would be fantastic.

  18. Anthony Says:

Count me in, closer to ATL, but will travel to KY

  19. Diego Says:

I’m in Indiana. No problem to travel.

  20. Milt Says:

I’m outside Cinci myself but Louisville is my old stomping ground. I’d be interested in coming as long as time/price work out.

  21. Rafael Says:

Training online will be Emazing for people in Latin america that use Pfsense .. and we have no time to travel… 🙂

  22. Yoshamano Says:

Looking at the cost for the EuroBSDCon lesson if the additional cost doesn’t push the total above $350 then count me in.

  23. Joseph Guarino Says:

I’m interested in streaming or video training. Not sure I could travel at this juncture. Keep up the great work guys!

  24. treisinger Says:

It would be very cool, if you could provide specialized video on demand training sessions for development, customization/rebranding, templates development ….

  25. Quang Do Says:

yes i would be interested if this be held in US

  26. Chip Says:

Count me in for training. Louisville, KY isn’t just around the corner for me, but I’d prefer traveling there over streaming. Any thoughts on doing on-line, interactive training in the future?

  27. Vaughn Reid III Says:

I am very interested in some US training. Since I’m in Indiana, Louisville sounds good 🙂

I’d like to see more than just an overview type of session. Maybe, a couple of overview sessions and a few workshop tracks (basics, VLAN’s/LAG/Routing, Appliance/Add-On’s Stuff, Developer).

For something like this, I’d be willing to pay $250 to $500, depending on the quantity/quality of content. It might be a good idea to get the sessions qualified to count as continuing education for those who need it also.

  28. khaled azrak Says:

I live in france, and im ready to purchase the streaming videos.

  29. Todd Washburn Says:

I wouldn’t mind a drive to KY for something so valuable. Just let us know what the ding will be!

  30. Paul Says:

Hello: i´m from argentina, in southamerica.

live streaming will be an incredible opprtunity for the people like me.

no chance to travel but very interested in training.

  31. Ricardo Ramirez R. Says:

Hi there, any update about the dates?

  32. Chris Buechler Says:

Ricardo: Not yet, we weren’t able to schedule something before getting into the Thanksgiving to Christmas timeframe which is busy for places that can hold events like this for various parties, and I expected wasn’t a good time for a lot of attendees, so we’re now going to schedule it for January. Working on dates now and will have more info in the next month.

  33. Ricardo Ramirez R. Says:

Chris: January sound good, enjoy the rest of the year!!

  34. EricE Says:

Kentucky is a bit of a drive but doable – it would be worth it!

    Keep up the great work!

  37. Karsten Says:

+1 for a Webex- or Streaming-Session. US is a little bit too far to fly in for a two-day training.
